Alaska Native people continue to be impacted with the highest rate of violence than any other race in America and the issues of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons continues to be a priority for TCC and its Tribes.

Indigenous persons experience disproportionately high rates of violence, and, relatedly, are reported missing or are murdered at high rates. Alaska Natives experience disproportionate rates of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crimes, according to the Indian Law and Order Commission’s 2013 report.

Fact About Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons

2021, Alaska reported 229 cases of missing and murdered Indigenous persons –
149 missing and 80 murdered.

85% of Native women and 82% of Native men experience violence in their lifetime

Alaska Native women are overrepresented in the domestic violence victim population by 250 percent, and even though Alaska Natives comprise of 19 percent of the population in Alaska, they represent 47 percent of the reported rape victims in the state.
