In August, Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) leadership and Tribal leaders met with a group of U.S. Senate staff members and representatives of the American Lands Project to share information about TCC, Interior Alaska Tribes, and Tribal perspectives on the proposed Ambler Road Project.
The group included legislative staff representing seven U.S. Senators from across the country, along with two board members from the American Lands Project, a Seattle-based nonprofit that connects policymakers with public lands and the communities who depend on them. The organization works to provide decision-makers with firsthand experiences of federally protected lands and opportunities to hear directly from the people connected to those places.
During the meeting, Chief Hildebrand provided an overview of TCC and its work with the 42 Tribes of Interior Alaska. The discussion also focused on the proposed Ambler Road, the concerns raised by TCC Tribes about its potential impacts on subsistence, wildlife, waterways, cultural resources, and Tribal communities, and how the visitors could support TCC’s advocacy efforts.
Ana maasee’ to everyone who took part in this meeting. We look forward to our continued partnership as we work together to protect our land.
