Tanana Chiefs Conference Welcomes New Fairbanks City Mayor Mindy O’Neall

Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) was joined by several other local Alaska Native organizations last month in welcoming Fairbanks City Mayor Mindy O’Neall to her new role. Denakkanaaga, Fairbanks Native Association (FNA), Interior Regional Housing Authority (IRHA) and Doyon, Limited gifted O’Neall with Traditional items and sage advice.

“Fairbanks thrives from rural communities,” said Jack Wholecheese, First Chief of Denakkanaaga, “And they like to be treated with respect.”

Brian Ridley, Chief Chairman of TCC, pointed out the bright future ahead for the relationship between the City and local Native Organizations. “The dedication to bringing new voices to the table aligns closely with our shared values of collaboration and respect,” he said.

It’s a job Mayor O’Neall does not take lightly. At the welcoming gathering, she confided to the room that she will work hard to build partnerships and learn more about the economic contributions Alaska Native entities and shareholders have on the local and larger economy.

Grasping a gifted beaded necklace, O’Neall remarked, “I can feel the love of this necklace on my heart, and I can also feel the weight around my neck. What I have today is a big responsibility.”
