Resolution 2021-14: Caring for terminally ill patients

WHEREAS, Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) is an Alaska Native tribal health and social services consortium established by the Interior Alaska tribes and tribal communities, to provide a unified voice in advancing sovereign tribal governments through the promotion of physical and mental wellness, education, socioeconomic development and culture of the Interior Alaska Native; and

WHEREAS, TCC shall promote and protect the health and general welfare of our tribal members; and

WHEREAS, TCC compacts and contracts for Health Service funding for qualified members of the TCC Region; and

WHEREAS, In the past Indian Health Service had a hospital located in Tanana, Alaska that provided health care from Birth to Death for our Native people; and

WHEREAS, The TCC Region does not own a hospital that can provide for terminally ill patients for long term care; and

WHEREAS, Families and friends from villages and urban centers are left to provide for their terminally ill loved one’s care; and

WHEREAS, TCC does not have adequate plans to address the need for longer term care for terminally ill patients.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Tanana Chiefs Conference Full Board of Directors directs staff to create a plan that would include housing and nursing care that is needed to care for tribal members that are terminally ill.
