Resolution 2019-14: Urgent Health Needs of Alatna Village

WHEREAS, Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) is an Alaska Native tribal health and social services consortium established by the Interior Alaska tribes and tribal communities, to provide a unified voice in advancing sovereign tribal governments through the promotion of physical and mental wellness, education, socioeconomic development and culture of the Interior Alaska Native; and

WHEREAS, Alatna is a remote village situated off the road system and does not have its own airport or health aide; and

WHEREAS,  during periods of spring break-up and fall freeze-up, Alatna residents cannot safely cross the Koyukuk River to access the Allakaket Health Clinic or use the Allakaket airport to access additional medical facilities, nor can they leave the community by any other means; and

WHEREAS,  Alatna residents are at risk of death and permanent health damage during spring break-up and fall freeze-up when they have no access to health care.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the Alatna Village Council humbly requests funding and support for the following:

  1. A health aide that either permanently resides in Alatna or is based there during spring break-up and fall freeze-up in order to provide basic medical services and reduce the emotional distress of residents who have accidents or serious medical conditions; and
  1. A gravel airstrip or landing pad of sufficient size and quality to accommodate an airplane or helicopter that can evacuate residents in the event of an emergency.
