Concealing the past does not bring us forward- it hinders our mental health. We can benefit greatly from the opportunity for our Native Elders to tell their boarding school experiences to develop our shared understanding and to promote intergenerational healing. Many elders have agreed to make a formal disclosure and break the silence around this topic in a supportive environment, with time available for others to share as well.
The TCC Division of Wellness and Prevention and Behavioral Health are working in partnership to sponsor this event, along with Chief Kenny Blacksmith on Recovery of Trauma – Personal Story, and Justice Work in Canada. Ben Jacuk, Indigenous Researcher of the Alaska Native Heritage Center, will present a slide show on the boarding school era in Alaska.
