WHEREAS, the Lower Yukon subregion of Grayling, Anvik, Shageluk, and Holy Cross have limited access to adequate substance abuse and treatment centers as the communities are on southern end of the TCC region and northern end of the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation region; and
WHEREAS, the Lower Yukon subregion, and the entire TCC region, is plagued with high rates of alcohol and substance abuse amongst our people, and it continues to be a priority for Tribes, TCC, and YKHC to address; and
WHEREAS, TCC recently adopted the Reclaiming Our People (Resolution 2017-13) initiative which focuses on the overall health and wellness of the interior Native people, and which still recognizes that alcohol is one of the greatest challenges we face; and
WHEREAS, historically, Shageluk and the Lower Yukon subregion supported “Simple Camp”, an alcohol sobriety camp located in the old village of Shageluk which transformed many people’s lives and was accessible to the people from this area and beyond; and
WHEREAS, this camp would operate similar to “Simple Camp” and Old Minto Family Recovery Camp, TCCs long-standing substance abuse facility, accessible out of the Fairbanks area, and will be rooted in our Native values. It will focus on the individual and family’s healing and recovery while living on the land and living a subsistence lifestyle; and
WHEREAS, the Lower Yukon subregion of Grayling, Anvik, Shageluk, and Holy Cross are committed to supporting the overall health and wellness of our people and will continue to advocate for and support this Sobriety Camp; and
WHEREAS, Shageluk continues to offer support for this type of treatment camp by working jointly with our local village corporation, city, and Tribe, to host this facility on our traditional lands.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Tanana Chiefs Conference Full Board of Directors recognizes that the Lower Yukon subregion does not have adequate access to vital resources such as a substance abuse treatment facility; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Tanana Chiefs Conference Full Board of Directors hereby directs Tanana Chiefs Conference staff to assist in facilitating the planning efforts that will officially establish this sobriety camp within other regions as requested; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Tanana Chiefs Conference Full Board of Directors hereby directs Tanana Chiefs Conference staff to continue to support the sobriety camp, once established, in partnership with Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation and the Tribes of Grayling, Anvik, Shageluk and Holy Cross.
