Resolution 2018-19: Protect Our Tribal Members from Sexual Abuse, Domestic Violence, and Substance Abuse


WHEREAS, Tanana Chiefs Conference’s Mission is to provide a unified voice in advancing sovereign tribal governments through the promotion of physical and mental wellness, education, socioeconomic development, and culture of the Interior Alaska Native people; and

WHEREAS, the Interior region’s rates of sexual abuse, domestic violence, and child rape are some of the highest in the nation; and

WHEREAS, protecting our children from the ongoing effects of generational sexual violence is a crucial priority for TCC’s mission; and

WHEREAS, it is the duty and inherent responsibility of tribal governments to protect tribal citizens; and

WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of the chiefs to practice their sovereign right to protect children from sexual assault in interior communities; and

WHEREAS, many adults, teenage youth and children in the interior are faced with sexual violence and exploitation and lack an understanding of rape and consent; and
WHEREAS, healthy sexual education is a public health and community need.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Tanana Chiefs Conference Full Board of Directors prioritize protection of the next generation of tribal
citizens from sexual abuse, domestic violence, and substance abuse with investment in education on healthy sexual practices, healthy family habits, and community responsibility for the children in our communities.
