Walk of Remembrance Planned for Johnny Wallis

Press Release For Immediate Release

January 7, 2013

Fairbanks, Alaska — A walk of remembrance will occur January 8, 2013, to remember Mr. Johnny Wallis and to honor the dignity of every human life. The walk will begin at 5 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 1030 Second Avenue. It will conclude on the sidewalk beside the downtown post office, where Father Scott Fisher and the Reverend Shirley Lee will lead a brief prayer vigil. People wishing to participate should dress warmly.

“This is not just another crime on the police blotter that routinely happens in our community. We should be asking ourselves how someone could die in such a way in such a public place. The incident was barely covered by the media – have we become so calloused to such events? A life was taken and we support the family in their quest for answers.” Jerry Isaac, TCC President, stated.

Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) is deeply concerned about the incident that took the life of Mr. Wallis. Mr. Wallis, an older Gwich’in man from Fort Yukon, succumbed to burns suffered last week while he was sleeping at the downtown post office building. It has not yet officially been determined how or why the fire occurred.
