Fairbanks, Alaska— For several years, Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) along with the Alaska State Department of Corrections (DOC) have been working on bringing a program to Fairbanks that would allow inmates at Colorado’s Hudson Correctional Facility to visit with their relatives and loved ones here in the Fairbanks. The program that is being implemented is called ‘Video Visiting’, similar to ‘Skyping’, where both parties will be able to see, hear, and speak to one another via the internet. “TCC is committed to helping maintain family connections between families living in Alaska and inmates incarcerated outside of the state,” said TCC President Jerry Isaac.

The new program will provide a way for families to visit with their loved ones without the added costs of traveling to another state, which isn’t always affordable for some. “This cooperative effort will make it possible for inmate family members in the interior to have a more meaningful face to face visit,” said Alaska Department of Corrections Commission Joe Schmidt, ”I can understand that it is difficult and expensive to travel. TCC thought ‘outside the box’ and the result is a practical solution to a real problem.”

TCC’s Information Services (IS) Department worked with DOC on establishing the necessary internet connections and secured the proper equipment. TCC is providing an area in the Al Ketzler Sr. building to accommodate the visits.

Visiting is available by reservation only on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Fairbanks time).  There are only three visits per day, as the prison takes 30 minutes between visits for turn-over.  Visits last 30 minutes and there is no cost at this time.  Visitors much check in at least 15 minutes before the visit time and have identification.   Due to the small room size in Fairbanks and prison policy, no more than four (4) visitors may be permitted to visit an inmate.

Visitors must be on the inmate’s approved visitor list.  (If you are not on the inmate’s approved visitor list the inmate must send you a visitor request form to complete – which takes about a month to process once you have returned it.)

To arrange a video visit you must call the Hudson Correctional Center at 1-303-536-2600 .It is a long distance call.  Remind the Video Visit Coordinator that you are requesting visits for Fairbanks, as there are other locations in Alaska that also do video visits.

It is important to remember that while TCC is facilitating the visits in Fairbanks, the visits are controlled by Hudson Correctional Center.  The video visits and conduct of both the inmate and visitors is monitored.  This arrangement is a courtesy and any misconduct by either the inmate or visitors can jeopardize its operation.
