The road would originate at the Dalton Highway, bisect Gates of the Arctic National Preserve, and terminate in the Ambler Mining District along the Kobuk River. The road would allow private industrial access to at least four mining prospects, and could facilitate more than 150 truckloads per day of fuel, ore, and materials. Because the project would require hundreds of creek crossings and culverts, and would affect four National Wild and Scenic Rivers, environmental, tribal, and outdoor recreation groups have raised concerns over the potential affects on aquatic ecosystems, fish populations, subsistence opportunities, and wilderness recreation. Some of the potential impacts from the road and associated mines could include heavy metal contamination of water and fish, fuel spills, siltation, and loss of a “wilderness experience” for recreationists. Given those concerns, WCS has embarked on a baseline study of heavy metal contaminants in sediment, aquatic vegetation, and fishes within potentially affected river drainages. With a final comment period open until December 19 before the Bureau of Land Management issues a decision on the fate of the road, it is important that the public and the scientific community are aware of the Ambler Road project and its potential effects on northern Alaska. Recent Alaska megaprojects have compelled the scientific community to wade into conservation debates (e.g., Alaska Chapter and National American Fisheries Society statements against Pebble Mine), but the role of scientists in conservation advocacy is up for debate and should be discussed.\n\n\n\n\n
