2004 Project Highlights

Contemporary Subsistence Uses and Population Distribution of Non-Salmon Fish in the Grayling, Anvik, Shageluk, and Holy Cross Area

Village Public Safety Officer.
  • This project was completed in February 2005. Information was gathered by conducting interviews with elders and residents about local taxonomy, life history, traditional and contemporary harvest and preparation, and relative abundance and population trends of non-salmon species.
  • Door to door harvest surveys were completed for calendar year 2002.
  • Maps of non-salmon fishing methods, harvest, and location were created.
  • Radio telemetry of Northern Pike- the winter pike fishery was sampled as well as recovering tags for location data
  • Participant observation was one of several key aspects of this project.
  • Funded by: USFWS, OSM

Educational Outreach through the Collection of Biological Data

Village Public Safety Officer.
  • Communities that participated: Holy Cross, Grayling, Koyukuk, Huslia, Galena , Ruby, and Minto
  • Three people were hired per community to collect Age/Sex/Length data by collecting fish scales, fin tissues for genetic stock identification, and heart tissues for Ichthyophonus presence/absence
  • Technicians gathered biological data from subsistence caught Chinook and summer chum salmon
  • Data was submitted to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the Conservation Genetics Laboratory of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, and Bering Sea Fishermen's Association
  • Data was entered into a database at TCC
  • Data may be used in future fisheries management decisions
  • Funded by: AYKSSI
  • Investigators: TCC, BSFA

Abundance and Run Timing of Chinook Salmon in the Goodpaster River

Village Public Safety Officer.
  • This project enumerated Chinook salmon using a counting tower
  • The Goodpaster River is located near Delta Junction
  • This project monitors the Chinook salmon population so as to detect changes in the population due to the Tech Pogo Mine mining for Gold.
  • Funded by: Tech Pogo Mine

Seasonal Distribution and Important Habitats of Three Whitefish Species in the Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge Using Radio Telemetry

Village Public Safety Officer.
  • Identify spawning, over-wintering, and feeding habitats of three whitefish species using radio telemetry
  • Gather traditional ecological knowledge about whitefish species from several communities located in and around the Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge
