Office of Environmental Health

The TCC Office of Environmental Health (OEH) has Environment Health Specialists and engineers who help villages with:

· dumps
· food safety
· hazardous materials disposal
· rabies vaccinations for dogs
· safe drinking water
· sewer systems

Two categories of employees comprise the OEH. These categories are Engineers and Environmental Health Specialists. Together, these individuals provide assistance to Tribal leaders, health aides, sanitation facility managers, and water/waste plant operators throughout the TCC region.

Following is a brief description of the duties undertaken by each of the OEH categories:

Engineers:

TCC Engineers assist villages with the operation and maintenance of their water, sewer, and solid waste facilities. Their work includes project planning and funding requests; estimating operating costs and revenues; preparing Operation & Maintenance Manuals and Preventive Maintenance Plans for sanitation facilities; and assisting villages with problems that affect their ability to efficiently operate and maintain their sanitation facilities. In addition, the engineering section provides management of the TCC operator and utility manager training program.

Environmental Health Specialist:

The Environmental Health Specialists are responsible for developing and implementing a multi-faceted environmental health services program. They assist Tribes with water supply protection; safe handling and disposal of sewage and solid waste; food sanitation; vector control (including the rabies virus); injury prevention in villages; and hazardous materials management. In addition, they conduct surveys of village health and sanitation facilities, and conduct occupational health and safety investigations.

The OEH program receives its direction primarily from village teams. There is one village team for every TCC village. Every team is made up of one Engineer and one Environmental Health Specialist. Teams identify their work priorities according to input from villages.
