Tanana Chiefs Conference’s Education Department supports the mission of our consortium of Interior Alaska tribes by promoting educational opportunities that advance the lives of our enrolled and at-large tribal members and their descendents.

Through the direction provided by our regional Education and Interior Athabascan Tribal College Councils, our education staff assists tribal members and communities in pursuing educational experiences that strengthen their skills, talents and abilities to create the life they envision for themselves and our Interior tribes.

TCC’s Education Department assists eligible Alaska Native tribal members and their descendents whose services are administered by TCC, in pursuing educational and professional opportunities that lead to academic success, graduation and secure employment.

Many of the tribes within the TCC region administer their own educational services through their self-governance status. If a tribe is not listed in the educational services administered by TCC, then please refer to our Self-Governance webpage for further information on the governance status held by each tribe. You may also contact our Education Department if you need clarification about the individual tribes that we assist.

Higher Education

Higher Education provides financial awards to students in college and post-secondary vocational education programs. Guidance is also provided to students in obtaining financial support from sources of funding other than TCC.

  • Nenana

    Adult Basic Education

The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program provides support for students seeking to complete high school equivalency examinations, or are in need to upgrades in basic core courses (math, English, etc.). Tanana Chiefs Conference provides ABE services for Minto, Nikolai and Tetlin. We also work cooperatively with the Adult Learning Programs of Alaska to jointly assist eligible individuals in their efforts to obtain their basic education.

    Johnson O’Malley Program

Through annual individual agreements, Tanana Chiefs Education Department works with various tribal entities to deliver their Johnson-O’Malley (JOM) Programs. For the 2011-12 year, Tanana Chiefs is working with Dot Lake, Eagle, Healy Lake, Holy Cross, Minto and Nenana.

The purpose of the JOM program is to provide supplementary financial assistance to meet the unique and specialized educational needs of Alaska Native and American Indian children. To assure parent participation and control, the JOM Act requires an active and involved Parent/Indian Education Committee and a completed Education Plan to guide the program. The TCC Education Department works collaboratively with our tribes and their established parent committee to jointly develop and delivery their JOM program.

    Interior Athabascan Tribal College

Tanana Chiefs continues to explore and work towards establishing, accrediting and delivering responsive educational opportunities through the Interior Athabascan Tribal College.
