Allakaket 
The Youth Center is run by a Youth Development Specialist (YDS). The YDS in each village not only oversees the Youth Center, they also work with enrolled youth on creating a long-term career plan.  The YDS works with each individual youth in building job skills, and assists with academics to help youth in reaching their career goals.  The YDS is also a mentor and role model to the youth.  They encourage healthy, drug-free lifestyles by coordinating drug-free events at the Youth Center, such as dances and family game nights. 

The YDS also obtains information on opportunities for youth such as Leadership Conferences, basketball tournaments, internships and career opportunities... and recruits youth to participate.

A message from James...

My goal as the Youth Development Specialist, is participation from everyone who 14-21 years old.  Not only the participation from the youth but everyone in the community!  Participation is a must for this program to work, I can’t stress that enough.  My goal is to help the youth achieve their educational and employment goals.  The world we live in is very competitive and fast paced.  I feel that the YOG program will prepare the youth for their educational and employment needs.

The youth are our future and they need the tools and training to make it in the world today.  I want them to get all the education and work experience with this program.  The Youth Center will be their information center.  I want them to be prepared for job interviews and higher education.  If I help one youth achieve their goals, then the YOG program is a success.  I want more than one success story; I want every youth to reach their goals.

And finally, community involvement is very important for this program to work.  Volunteers and mentors are another goal I want to achieve.  Plus the youth today need for us to listen to them.  That means a lot to them and it shows them that we care about what they have to say.  I’ll do my best to reach all my goals.  I have confidence that I’ll achieve all my goals because the youth are involved, and my job will be for me to help them reach their needs.
