Family Services
Family Services provides a range of programs assisting individuals
and families in rural communities. Financial support is provided
by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Alaska Department of
Health and Social Services.
Special initiatives include actions to address problems of
domestic violence and child neglect.
- The Social Services Program offers counseling and referrals
from department staff in Fairbanks and each subregional office.
The service is open to Native clients on an itinerant basis.
- The Indian Child Welfare Act Program provides technical
assistance and information to village councils and individual
families involved in exercising their rights under ICWA.
- The Headstart Program provides preschool education services
to about 140 children in eight villages.
- The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program provides financial
help to 1,500 households each year to offset the costs of
home heating in rural areas.
- The Child Care and Development Block Grant is a grant program
intended to increase the availability and affordability of
quality child care services.
- The Developmental Disabilities Program provides respite
and support services for families of children who have developmental
disabilities.
- Vocational Rehabilitation provides coordination of services
for village adolescents and adults with disabilities.
- Elder Nutrition provides village-based nutrition and social
services to the region's elders.
- Emergency Food and Shelter provides nutrition and housing
services for families in crisis.
